Distance Learning Resources
OCM BOCES Professional Learning RESOURCES
It has been a team effort at OCM BOCES to move professional learning online, and we are happy to have been part of the Instructional Support Services (ISS) effort to offer 60 online workshops and drop-in sessions to support almost 1,400 educators. We are a social species, and while it has been very difficult to be separate from one another, the contact in these sessions has been educational, inspiring and restorative. We continue to update our ISS Instructional Support for Parents and Teachers Page. This is one-stop shopping for every resource to help you take care of your students and yourselves.
Reading Rockets - ReadingRockets has a wonderful site you can share with families that includes resources to help students in reading, writing, math, science, art, music, health and more. If you are looking to share an abundant resource with parents/guardians that will not overwhelm them, we think this is a great one to share.
Families with No Internet Access - WCNY Public Television is working to offer daily learning opportunities, especially for students with no internet connection. In addition to the resources shared by districts, this is a great resource to share with families.
Elementary Learners: Distance learning has brought us closer than ever to some of our favorite authors, and #OperationStoryTime lets your littles hear their favorite stories from none other than the author him/her/themself
Middle and High School Learners: Khan Academy, AP Central, and Scholastic Learning are offering daily lessons.
Netflix: We are fortunate to have Netflix thanks to a relative who has purchased multiple screens. ‘Homeschool Hideout’ compiled a list of “150 Educational Programs on Netflix” right now.
FREE READING Opportunities: We are offering several book studies right now via Google Classroom. Most of these titles are available for free in the OCM BOCES SLS Professional eBook Library. Check out these titles and look for all of the online opportunities on MLP/Web Registration. In addition to our book studies, we have offered Zoom sessions on the Regents Framework Exams, AP Exams and Responsive Classroom in distance learning. Please continue to check the OCM BOCES Catalog for distance learning professional learning opportunities, as well as on-campus opportunities we are still planning for later this spring.

As many students as needed can access each title. Please visit our research and ebooks page and click on SORA or OVERDRIVE to access these titles.

Pass the time with Poetry
April is Poetry Month! This is a great time to read some Poetry with your family! The Poetry Foundation offers thematic collections, podcasts, and learning activities. If you choose “Learn” from the toolbar, you can sort out poems, lessons, and other materials organized by age group. The Poetry Foundation also authoritative site, (So many poetry sites online aren’t faithful to the poem’s structure and appearance).
Poetry 180 is also great! The site was established by Billy Collins when he was the U.S. Poet Laureate. The poems are specifically chosen for their appeal to high school students, but there are many that would be great to read as a family and discuss. The site provides a poem for every one of the 180 days we are required to be in school each year.
You can also check out Robert Pinsky’s Poetry Out Loud project, which he started when he was U.S. Poet Laureate. It’s also authoritative and offers poems, videos, collections, and activities.
