Mission Statement
The mission of the Burton Street Library Media Center is to enable students to become effective users and creators of ideas and information by:
- fostering an appreciation for literature and reading.
- providing students and teachers with access to appropriate materials in all formats.
- developing a collection that is representative of all students' interests and abilities.
- preparing students to use technology and information safely, ethically, and responsibly.
- becoming empathetic and innovative thinkers and designers, challenging current ideas and creating their own.
Circulation Policy
Students check out books every library class. All grade levels are encouraged to check out books outside of library class if they finish a book early or feel as if they chose the wrong book. They can do this at any time throughout the day.
- Kindergarten: Kindergarteners may check out one book from the library. We encourage students to check out books appropriate for their reading level. Particularly for kindergarten easy-reading books are encouraged for students to recognize sight words and begin recognizing sentence structure.
- 1st Grade: First graders may check out one book at the beginning of the year. Half way through the year they may check out two books. Students are encouraged to check out books appropriate for their reading level, as well as books that give good examples of sentence structure.
- 2nd Grade: Second graders may check out two books. Students are encouraged to check out books appropriate for their reading level. They are also encouraged to check out at least one chapter book.
- 3rd Grade: Third graders can check out three books. Students are encouraged to check out a variety of genres and texts. They must check out at least one chapter book appropriate for their reading level.
- 4th Grade: Fourth graders can check out three books. Students are encouraged to check out a variety of genres and texts. They must check out at least one chapter book appropriate for their reading level.
